How much will it cost me to live in Wanaka?
Based on previous seasons, we estimate a minimum weekly budget of approximately NZ$500 for meals and entertainment.
What’s not included in my course?
The following are not included in the course fee:
- Flights to and from Queenstown or Christchurch
- Meals
- Ski equipment
- Accommodation, transport, and lift passes (included only in the complete package). Click here to learn more.
If my package includes a season pass, can I collect it before my course or camp starts?
Yes, you can arrange to collect your season pass in advance. Please contact us to set up an early pickup.
Do I need insurance?
Yes, it is mandatory for all participants to have full medical and travel insurance.
How old is everyone on the course?
Our participants typically range from 17 to 60 years old. On average:
- 40% are aged 18–25
- 30% are aged 26–45
- 30% are aged 46 and older
Where does everyone come from?
Our participants come from a diverse range of countries. Approximately:
- 40% are from the UK, Ireland, Europe, Australia, and North America
- 40% are from Asia
- 20% are from Eastern Europe, South Africa, Israel, and South America
Do Rookies get discounts in Wanaka?
Yes. As a Rookie Academy participant, you may receive discounts at selected sports shops, gyms, bars, and other local businesses.
Can I work while doing the Course?
Yes, some participants work part-time while on the course with a New Zealand Working Holiday Visa. However, if you only have one visa opportunity for New Zealand, we recommend saving it for future employment as an instructor.
How far are the mountains from Wanaka?
Treble Cone is approximately a 40-minute drive from Wanaka, while Cardrona is about 50 minutes.
What skis should I bring?
We strongly recommend shaped skis to maximize your training experience. Click here for more details.
Who will my trainer be?
You will train with a team of international Rookie Academy trainers. Trainers rotate weekly to ensure variety and skill development. Check out our trainer profiles here.
How fit/strong do I need to be?
We recommend at least light strength training, core exercises, and mobility workouts before starting. Arriving in good physical condition will help you maximise your training experience. Click here to learn more.
Can I leave my snow equipment on the mountain?
Yes, there is a large locker room at Treble Cone available for those on a Transport Pass or Full Package. Locker rentals are available for one to five weeks.
Is food expensive on Treble Cone?
As with most ski resorts, food at Treble Cone is priced at a premium. However, the quality is excellent. The Rookie Academy locker room has a microwave and kettle for those who prefer to bring their own meals.
Accommodation
How close is my accommodation to town?
Most of our Rookies accommodations are within a 15-minute walk or closer to town.
Is food supplied with accommodation?
No, but all accommodations include kitchen facilities and utensils.
Can I get my own room?
Yes, private rooms are available at an additional cost, subject to availability.
Can my partner stay with me?
Yes, but additional charges apply as room rates are per person.
Transport
Do we get transfers within New Zealand?
Yes, transfers from Queenstown to Wanaka are included in the Full Course Package or Transport Pass.
Do I get transport to the mountains every day?
Yes, daily transport to the mountains is provided for those on the Complete Package.
What time does the bus leave for Treble Cone?
The bus departs from Wanaka before 7:30 AM and returns from Treble Cone at 3:45 PM sharp.
Alliances and Employment
Are the qualifications recognised internationally?
Yes, all qualifications run within Rookie Academy are internationally recognised under the ISIA framework.
Which qualification is the best?
Each country values its own system, but we recommend choosing a qualification based on where you want to teach. We can help with career advice.
Can I cross-credit my certification?
Yes, you can transfer between international certification levels.
What are my employment prospects?
We have a strong network of ski schools in North America, Asia, Europe, and New Zealand, providing excellent employment opportunities.
If I fail my exam, can I still get a job?
Yes, many ski schools hire Level 1 instructors with kids' certifications. However, passing Level 2 increases job opportunities and pay rates.
Am I guaranteed a job after the course?
No, we reserve the right not to recommend someone for a position if we believe they may damage our relationships with ski schools, though this is rare.
Why get certified in the Southern Hemisphere?
Gaining qualifications in New Zealand allows you to start teaching in the Northern Hemisphere straight away, rather than spending the season training and sitting exams.
